Etchings by the Norwich School artist, Thomas Lound, are extremely rare.
Moreover, the few contemporary impressions, and those printed immediately after his death,
often fail to satisfy.
His 16 etching plates were made between 1832 and 1834 and a group of them were retained by
his estate and eventually sold in 1957. It is from these plates that this edition was
printed in 1974. The plates are now in the Castle Museum, Norwich.
The 1974 edition was published by Christopher Drake Ltd and announced as an edition of 75
plus 10 sets hors de commerce. It is not certain that the whole edition was printed; even
if it was, 35 sets were never issued and these are now presented in beautifully prepared
quarter-bound leather and buckram portfolios lodged in a matching buckram slipcase. They
are numbered 41 - 75 to complement the Drake edition.
Within the portfolio is a specially prepared 8-page booklet with an excellent and detailed
account of the prints by Michael Pidgley.
The fresh, naturalistic style of the Norwich School etchings needs to be shown in clear
atmospheric impressions. Lound's prints, where they can be found, generally seem to have
been printed from plates which have not been properly prepared and which therefore lack
the immediacy of the artist's vision. It is therefore rather a special situation to be
able to offer reprinted impressions which can seriously claim to improve on contemporary
ones. |
