Seymour Haden was the pre-eminent figure in nineteenth-century British printmaking. First acclaimed by the French critic Philippe Burty, Haden established a formidable reputation both as an artist and a connoisseur in Britain, Europe and America. His etchings were avidly collected on both sides of the Atlantic and the best of them remain amongst the most sublime and inspired interpretations of landscape.

Haden's interest in printmaking was reawakened by the arrival of his brother-in-law, James Whistler (19 years his junior) at the Hadens' house in Sloane Street in 1855. Within a couple of years a press had been installed there and for a time the two artists worked together towards a series of etchings of the Thames. The relationship, however, did not last.

Although the epitome of a Victorian gentleman, Haden presented false and contradictory information about himself and his art. A prominent London surgeon, he pursued art during his leisure and proselytised his opinions about creative printmaking. He lectured, wrote articles and books and eventually became the founding president of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers.

A chapter on Haden's life and art precedes the catalogue and helps to correct some popularly held misconceptions about this remarkable man. Dr Schneiderman's new catalogue lists every print in every known state. He also examines Haden's working method and records the artist's manuscripts notes about the prints and also the annotations on individual impressions. Schneiderman visited almost every significant collection of Haden's prints in the world and lists institutionally held examples of each state.

The book is accompanied by a loosely inserted ADDENDA & ERRATA giving details of states which have come to light since publication. (This may also be ordered separately.)

Because the first limited edition (published in 1983) is now virtually sold out, a smaller second edition has been prepared to include the addenda and errata. However, the specification has been reduced.
